5 Tips for Hosting Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year. Good food, great company, and plenty of wine. Around here, we keep it simple with thoughtful pairings, easy hospitality, and a table that feels inviting, not intimidating. Whether you are hosting for the first time or have your traditions down, here are my five favorite tips for creating a relaxed and memorable Thanksgiving, Vaughn Duffy style.

1. START WITH SOMETHING LIVELY

I like to welcome guests with something bright and lively, like our Rosé of Pinot Noir. It is refreshing, a little festive, and pairs with just about anything you set out, from goat cheese crostini to spiced nuts. That first sip sets the tone for the evening.

2. KEEP THE TABLE NATURAL

I am not a fan of overcomplicated tablescapes. Ours usually includes simple linens, fresh herbs, and a few candles. I grab a few sprigs of rosemary from the garden and tuck them into napkin rings. A bottle or two of Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir makes a great centerpiece and adds some character to the table.

3. SERVE WINE FAMILY STYLE

We always put a few open bottles on the table and let guests pour what they like. Pinot Noir is the star of Thanksgiving because it is versatile enough to complement turkey, stuffing, and all the sides. Our 2023 Pinot Noirs have depth, elegance, and a beautiful balance of fruit and spice that works with everything from roasted vegetables to cranberry sauce.

4. GIVE EVERYONE A ROLE

Hosting does not mean doing it all yourself. Someone carves, someone pours, someone puts together the playlist. It keeps everyone involved and makes the evening more relaxed. And yes, I am usually the one making sure glasses stay full.

5. END ON A SMOOTH NOTE

After dinner, I like to switch gears with something dark and cozy, maybe a chocolate tart or spiced cake paired with our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir or Russian River Zinfandel. The texture and cocoa notes in the Pinot are incredible with chocolate, while the Zinfandel’s dark fruit and spice make it just as unforgettable.

In the end, Thanksgiving is not about perfection. It is about connection, a good meal, a great glass of wine, and the people around the table. If you have that, you have already nailed it.
